Diagnosing Symptoms and Controlling Panic Attacks

Have you or someone you love experienced panic attacks?  Maybe you're unsure?  It is crucial to figure out exactly what the nature of your problem is.  I strongly earge you to see a physician to rule out any other health issues that may be contributing to your anxiety.  It is only after you know for sure what your problem is that you can begin diagnosing symptoms and controlling panic attacks.

There are common symptoms that vary from person to person, but if you experience even 3 of the following sensations you are most likely having panic attacks.

Common Symptoms of Panic Attacks Include:
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Chills/hot flashes
  • Chest pains
  • Sweating (hot or cold)
  • Trouble breathing/hyperventilating
  • Feeling of choking/tight throat
  • Feeling of suffocation
  • Pounding heart rate
  • Trembling limbs
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Feeling disconnected from your environment/Feeling of unreality
  • Fear of losing control/going crazy/dying
Panic attacks usually only last 5-10 minutes but the symptoms can start about 30 minutes prior to the actual attack.

Most who feel these sensations for the very first time believe they have experienced a heart attack.  Its only when the doctor tells them they are completely fine that they realize they may have had a panic attack.

Unfortunately panic attacks do not go away if you ignore or avoid them.  You can actually develop a full blown panic disorder from ignoring the problem.

Relieving Symptoms and Controlling Panic Attacks

There are several methods for controlling panic attacks, each with their own level of success.

Medications
Medications do provide a certain amount of relief, but this is a temporary effect.  Your symptoms and attacks will be less frequent and not as intense while you are taking the drug.  However, as soon as you stop using the medication your condition will go back to normal.

Medication has seen the most success when combined with therapy.  The meds provide temporary relief while you work towards a solution with your therapist.

Relaxation Techniques
Deep relaxation techniques can lower general anxiety, but it is hard to say that they will really help you if your condition is severe.  If you have severe anxiety it may be impossible to control your breathing during times of panic.

Therapy
Therapy has seen the most success with eliminating panic attacks.  Particularly cognitive behavioral therapy will help you identify what behaviors and thought patterns are causing your attacks.  By working with a therapist to eliminate these behaviors and destructive thoughts you can eliminate panic attacks from your life forever.

These are rather vague descriptions  as everyone is different.  With some all they need is a pill while others prefer the drug-free therapy method.

The most documented success was from a combination of medication and therapy.  The meds keep you balanced in between therapy sessions.

Identifying symptoms and controlling panic attacks becomes easier with knowledge about anxiety and panic.  Most of the people that have suffered for over 10 years from these episodes were not even aware of what their problem was.

You can’t fix a problem that you do not understand, so be sure to learn as much about panic and anxiety as you can to have a better understanding of what is going on with your body and mind.
